Freiburg - GERMANY

We selected Freiburg im Breisgau as one of our destinations for a couple of reasons. One primary allure was its proximity to the enchanting Black Forest and the other was the opportunity to visit the world famous Cuckoo Clock Shop. 

Discovering that Freiburg is a vibrant university city nestled within a charming medieval old town, crisscrossed by picturesque brooks (bächle), added an extra layer of appeal. Our initial day was spent leisurely strolling along the captivating cobblestone streets, adorned with intriguing shops and numerous delightful cafes.

The subsequent day, we embarked on a picturesque train journey to Triberg im Schwarzwald, a quaint town situated in the heart of the Black Forest and home to the Cuckoo Clock shop. Lynette and I had already decided to commemorate our joint Christmas celebration with the purchase of a Cuckoo Clock. This decision held particular significance, as my parents had received a cuckoo clock as a wedding gift from the Black Forest. Throughout my childhood, I fondly recalled this beautiful timepiece proudly hanging on the wall near our dining room table. Embracing this German family tradition, we revelled in the delightful experience of choosing our clock in this amazing shop.

Following our shopping expedition, we embarked on a steep ascent further into the Black Forest, culminating in a visit to a stunning waterfall—an additional tourist attraction in Triberg. The Triberg Waterfalls, positioned just above the main village, constitute Germany's highest waterfall, cascading a total of 163 meters in a series of breathtaking falls. The spectacle was further enhanced by recent heavy rainfall.

No journey to the Black Forest would be complete without savoring the iconic Black Forest cake, providing a delectable conclusion to our enriching and picturesque visit.
